When ever I see a new information book is due to be published I prick my ears for more details, and learning more about Evolution I knew this was definitely going to be a book that I wanted to celebrate publication of on my blog. The fact that it is written in collaboration with the Natural History Museum (which everyone loves visiting and holds in high esteem), and that the two authors Sarah Darwin and Eva-Maria Sadowski are Scientists reassured me (as it will you future readers) that the content was going to be factually correct, collated by current professionals in the relevant field of science (not someone many moons ago, making the content dated), and engaging for all kinds of readers, be it visual based or text. Just look at the stunning cover design, indicating the level of detail you can expect from the illustrative content inside by Olga Baumert.
I did wonder whether there was a link to author Sarah Darwin and the infamous Charles Darwin, who created the theory of evolution by natural selection, and I was absolutely delighted to find out that Sarah is great-great-granddaughter of Charles’. This detail not only further reassures you that the content of this book is factually correct, and authentic, but it also encourages you to pick up a copy of Evolution to see how the generations of Darwin have collectively inspired this book.
Page edge to page edge are adorned with highly detailed, exquisite illustrations that truly bring the book to life for the reader. The colour palette used is true to nature, and certainly has the desired effect of getting readers eyes to roam around the entire page taking in all the visual detail, which compliments the text perfectly. It is the perfectly balanced content for you to enjoy, and you truly will. We love dinosaurs in my family, and the section in the book ‘Dinosaurs in Charge’ was one of our favourites. We even learnt of a new type of dinosaur, the Giraffatitan, that loves to eat plants, and the illustration of a Giraffatitan helped us picture it for ourselves. All of the illustrations are labelled, and this works well if you have children that like to flick through books looking at the illustrations, with reading the book following one later. I am completely in awe of the illustrative content inside this book, and the incredible talent behind it.
This infographic style book features bitesize chunks of information that will appeal to the intended reader, meaning learning from this book can be achieved quickly and clearly. The inspiration that comes from becoming immersed in this book will undoubtedly see readers branch out to other books relating to what they have had the pleasure of learning about.
I am so excited to gift my copy of this book to a local primary school, who I know will be able to offer access to so many children, and that they will be delighted to add this book to their library, cherishing it as much as I would. This is such a informative and engaging book that is perfect for homework, research for topics in school, libraries, and to inspire children with bountiful knowledge on everything from dinosaurs (obviously!) to dogs we have as pets, plants to humans, and so much more. A beautiful gift for children and adults alike.
