Books and the People Who Make Them

Have you ever wondered how a book is made? Well if you are anything like me then this is the book for you.

This unique, fun and informative introduction to the publishing world shows young readers how a book makes its journey from the writer’s notebook to the reader’s hands.

What’s missing from the world of children’s books? A book about how a book gets made!

This behind-the-scenes exploration features colourful and quirky double page spreads that depict every stage in the life of a book. Young readers will learn why an editor’s to-do list is so long; what’s important to a book designer; how a book gets sold to libraries and stores; and what a printing press looks like. They’ll discover jobs they might not have known about, including literary critics, librarians, and sales representatives. And they’ll learn about topics beyond publishing, such as fan fiction, ebooks and audiobooks, and book collecting. Most of all, they’ll realise how the book they are reading actually came to be made.

Perfect for readers to peruse on their own or with their favourite grown up, this book is the first of its kind—a perfect complement to every young booklover’s library.

This interesting and informative book is divided into 10 sections. Each section begins with a double-page spread of the subject, and is followed by a double-page spread with more information about the subject. The 10 sections include author, editor, illustrator, graphic designer, sales representative, printer, bookseller, literary critic, librarian, and reader. Everything that a book needs. Each spread is filled with colourful illustrations, designed to reflect the subject at hand. The text on each spread is enclosed in several small text boxes.

There was one section  I was really interested in and that was of course The Librarian. In this section the author talks about how a librarian is exactly like a bookseller, a link between the book and the person wanting to read the book.

Of course being a librarian in different parts of the world means different things, so some of the text isn’t relative to Britain, but it’s still interesting to see how the job changes as you travel the world. This book gives an excellent insight into the publishing world.

A History of the World According to Cats

Discover secrets, stories and facts about history’s most fascinating felines! Young historians may never look at the past – or cats! – in quite the same way again.

Cats have prowled Earth for millennia, yet the history of the world has always been told through the eyes of humans. But now it’s time to – finally! – set the record straight and uncover the key role that cats have played in shaping the course of history. Did you know that ancient Egyptians loved cats so much that they had special laws to protect them? Or that Isaac Newton’s cat helped him develop the theory of gravity? How about that Féliette, a French street cat, was the first cat to go into space in 1963? A History of the World (According to Cats!) introduces us to fur-raising facts and adventures from around the world and across the centuries. Discovering unknown stories about real-life felines , including WWII heroes, courageous adventurers and even an astrocat that travelled in space (and made it back to Earth to tell the tale), this book places cats as the heroes of their own stories . Full of real-life stories, with all the boring stuff left out, this book takes a look at the world’s history through feline eyes .

Terry Pratchett  once famously said “Cats will amusingly tolerate humans only until someone comes up with a tin opener that can be operated with a paw.” And as a cat owner I can confirm this is true.

Cats were first domesticated 12000 years ago. Throughout history they have been part of our lives, seen as ridders of disease and Gods to some, and companions of the Gods. There are different types of cat, depending on the country. Big cats, small cats, tame cats , feral cats, there are so many to choose from.

But my favourite story has to be Three guys called Louis. The illustrations are bright and very detailed. Animal lovers will adore this.

Moon: A Peek-Through Picture Book

My space loving son absolutely loves this book.

Over deserts and forests, Arctic tundra and tropical beaches, the moon shines down on creatures around the world. Children will love discovering how it changes from day to day as the lunar cycle is shown through clever peek-through holes, each revealing the moon in a different size and shape.

It’s the perfect light nonfiction book for young and old stargazers–and an ideal bedtime book, ending with a giant moon hovering over a sleepy town hunkered down for bed. Full of activities and facts this is a must for all space fans.

Wheels- The Big Fun Book of Vehicles

  • Written and Illustrated by Tom Schamp

Oh what a beautiful book, aimed at vehicle lovers. We go on a trip around the world to look at various vehicles.

My favourite part of the book has to be the stagecoaches pages, we see how over time they have changed and how they got bigger and better over time.

We also get to see how carriages have been pulled over the years from elephants , dogs , rabbits and horses.

This will make a lovely present for young and old.
