I am a massive fan of YA. I was late to discover these genre but I’m making up for lost time by reading as much as I can.
One author who I read as much as I can is Cynthia Murphy, she is an amazing author and I always look forward to a new release.
I have discovered that I can’t read downstairs so most of my reading is done in bed. I took this on holiday and I dived straight in.
And boy this was her best yet.
Rules of The Midnight Game:
Do not turn on the lights.
Do not go to sleep.
Do not leave the building.
When a group who have met on a creepy Deddit thread decide to meet in real life, they only have one plan in mind: they are going to summon the Midnight Man. And once you start the Midnight Game, you must finish it – there’s no other way out! Six strangers. One night. But how many survivors?
This is told from the point of view of 6 teenagers who meet up online in a group chat.
They decide to meet up to play an game
The characters are Ellie, who is really headstrong and really stood up for the others. Mei, we have the smart cookie, with Callum the mysterious quiet guy, Toni is the goth girl, Hugo the posh boy and Reece the jock. I loved their interactions and seeing how each of them behaved. I loved how as the book progressed, you slowly got to know more about their backstories and why each of them ended up playing the game.
There weren’t really any other characters in the book.
The writing style of this book was a bit different to most books. You have the POV chapter, then you get a type of chat log or blog entry that tells you more of the backstory.
This is the sort of chat you would have on DM’s on Twitter.
The book switches a bit between past and present so to speak. It was fast paced and really action packed. I originally wanted to save half of the book over the week but it soon became obvious that this wasn’t going to happen but I just couldn´t stop reading. By a third of the book I was really hooked to the story. I liked the plot twists and kept guessing along. I will be honest and say I couldn’t see the twists coming, the ending was an complete surprise
This was an amazing read that kept me hooked until the end.
Teenagers will identify with these characters and the author has made this book really modern especially with all the social media that was used.
