21% Monster : Serpent Strike

When I first read the first book in the series I was hooked by the plot and idea.

I loved the idea of a person being 21% monster and not knowing it, I liked how Darren teamed up with Marek who is 19% alien and a computer nerd.

I liked how we saw the relationship between them grow and they learned to trust each other and work together, but what I liked best was that the book only contained a handful of characters.

By the second book we had been introduced to a new character  Aurona, a girl who is 17% sabre tooth polar bear and she joined Darren and Marek to try and defeat Xastris. This added to the relationship and made it interesting.

I was interested to see where book 3 would take the group of friend

For once, 21% monster teenage-boy Darren Devlin thinks he has the upper hand over Xastris, the secret organisation that transformed him into a genetically-modified superhuman. Since joining forces with 19% alien boy Marek Masters, 17% sabre-tooth polar-bear Aurora Valero, and now 16% alien girl Genie, Darren has never been in a stronger position…but neither have Xastris.

For they are planning an attack on the world’s greatest superpowers, with the fate of millions at stake. Can Darren and the team intercept Operation Serpent Strike…or will Xastris land their deadliest bite yet?

It was amazing, as soon as you read the first chapter you are straight back into the action. The addition of a new character Genie, 16% alien was a brilliant move. The  new character fixed right in. Now they are a team of 4 all with different strengths and weaknesses and they all must learn to work together.

In a side storyline we have Darren’s older sister Daisy who will protect and defend her brother from anything. But Darren will do anything to keep her out of his problems.

Sometimes when you read a book, the characters’ speech isn’t natural but in these series you can hear how natural the dialogue is, I swear it could be my children talking.

I did find myself having a soft spot for Marek, I think he was an amazing character and he and Darren bounce off each other really well.

Of course this book does deal with important issues such as learning difficulties, family issues but most importantly believing in yourself.

I have my fingers crossed that this series will be carried on and that there is another book in the pipeline.
